Bunga is Malay for flower, and that’s where the politeness ends. This is China Seas at full volume — oversized blooms in saffron yellow and white cracking open against a black ground, with the fine vein-work of traditional batik running through the whole composition like a reminder of where it came from. Batik is a wax-resist process that has been practiced across the Indonesian archipelago for at least a thousand years, and the characteristic crackle lines that Western decorators find so charming are technically a flaw — places where the wax broke and dye seeped through. The Javanese turned the flaw into a feature. China Seas turned the feature into a legend. This is one of those patterns that people either build an entire room around or walk past without stopping, and there is no version of the story where anyone is neutral.
