In the royal courts of old Java, geometric batik wasn’t decoration — it was law. Sultans issued actual decrees over which diagonal patterns commoners were forbidden to wear, reserving the sharpest, most disciplined geometry for the royal family alone. The restriction held even under foreign administration: in 1811, the British Lieutenant Governor of Java, Stamford Raffles — the same Raffles who’d go on to found Singapore — struck an agreement with Sultan Hamengkubuwono II promising not to interfere with any class’s right to wear any garment or ornament, with one specific exception carved out by name. Some patterns were too much to hand over even to keep the peace. Java Java doesn’t reproduce any single one of those forbidden motifs, but it inherits the discipline behind them: a diagonal geometry precise enough that a sultan once thought it worth legislating.
