The maze patterns of Central Javanese batik have been confounding Dutch colonial administrators and Western textile historians in roughly equal measure since the VOC first started cataloguing what it couldn’t quite reproduce.
Java Java belongs to that geometric tradition — an interlocking angular lattice with no beginning and no visible exit, hand-screened by China Seas on 100% acrylic suncloth made in the USA.
Four yards at 48” wide is enough for a pair of generous outdoor cushions or one conversation-starting pillow that doesn’t apologize for the weather.
Navy on Vellum is the colorway that never has to explain itself. The navy reads near-black under a pergola and true indigo in direct sun — it shifts through the day the way good denim does. The vellum ground keeps it warm rather than clinical, holding the lattice in a conversation rather than a confrontation. If you have looked at a stack of navy-and-white outdoor fabrics and thought they were all designed by the same committee on the same Tuesday, this is the one that wasn’t.
