Every pattern in the China Seas archive knows how to hold a room; Seya is the one that knows how to hold a coastline. Look at what the drawing actually is: palms and creatures of the reef rendered as calligraphy, blue on blue on white linen — a pattern that has clearly spent time somewhere the ferry only visits twice a week. The two blues do the work of tide charts: Sky sets the hour, the deeper Custom Blue sets the depth, and the white linen ground supplies the glare off the water at noon. Those room photographs in the listing are not styling accidents — Seya has been upholstering the good chairs of the seaboard for years, the summer rooms where sailing paintings hang over mantels and nobody has ever once said the word "coastal" aloud, because saying it would break the spell of simply being it.

Hand-printed in the USA on a European-woven linen ground, 52 inches wide, a tidy 16-inch repeat — which for the practical reader means the motif turns over quickly, cuts economically, and forgives the smaller project: cushions, a pair of chairs, roman shades that make a bathroom window into a porthole. Fifteen yards remain of this lot. Fifteen yards is one superb room or three perfect gestures, and this printing does not repeat — the tide goes out on custom colorways and does not consult the schedule. First come, first upholstered.
