In 1685, Louis XIV revoked the Edict of Nantes and drove the Huguenot silk weavers out of France. They went to England, to the Netherlands, to Prussia - and they took with them the design vocabulary of the most ambitious decorative program in Western history: the grammar of Versailles. Cherubs navigating impossible vessels. Fountains attended by minor deities. Urns large enough to require their own staff.

This is that grammar, printed on Belgian linen-cotton ground in old lilac, rust, and gold on tint. The repeat is 36 inches — large enough that every yard contains a complete argument about beauty and its obligations.

Thirty-one yards. First time at NYDFO. The ships have been waiting for the right port.
