Independence Engraving — Custom Turquoise on Tinted Belgian Linen / Cotton

The engraving version of Independence Toile strips the pattern back to its bones. Where the full-color toile prints give you the pageantry — the chariot, the leopards, the allegorical figures in their classical drapery — the engraving reads as line work: the kind of thing you might find in a folio of copperplate prints in a rare book shop, or framed behind glass in the American Wing of a museum. It is closer in spirit to the original 1785 source document, which was itself a single-color copperplate print on cotton, than any of the multicolor versions. The turquoise replaces the original's madder red, but the discipline is the same — one color doing all the work, every detail carried by the line rather than filled in by a second screen.

Five yards of this on Belgian linen-cotton, hand screen-printed in the USA. Enough for a pair of pillows and a French chair, or a single Roman shade in a room that already knows what it's about. The engraving version is for the person who wants the history without the volume — the same story told in a quieter voice, where you have to step closer to hear it.
