Medieval Europe found striped cloth so disreputable that it was assigned by custom to jugglers, hangmen, and other professions your mother warned you about — the historian Michel Pastoureau wrote an entire book about the scandal. The rehabilitation took centuries and came by sea: sailors, bathing costumes, cabana awnings, until the stripe completed the greatest image-laundering operation in textile history and emerged as the single most trustworthy pattern on earth. Riviera Stripe is the finished product of that reform — clean, even, upstanding — though like all reformed characters it’s more interesting for having a past.

The color has a past too. “Celadon” is, by the standard telling, named for Céladon — a lovesick shepherd in a seventeenth-century French romance who wandered the countryside in pale green ribbons — whose name the French then affixed to the sea-green glaze of Chinese ceramics. Which means this quiet stripe carries both a criminal record and a broken heart, and wears them beautifully: a green so soft it functions as a neutral, on white cotton that keeps everything honest.

Now the number: eighty-three yards, one lot. That is not accent-pillow territory. That is curtains-and-headboard-and-slipcovers-and-the-guest-room territory — an entire scheme cut from a single dye lot, with no praying that a reorder matches, because there is no reorder and it already matches.
