Prudence has thought this through.

Chintz has never had a reputation for judgment. When painted cottons arrived from India in the 1600s, England lost its head over them. Parliament banned printed calico imports in 1700, then in 1721 banned wearing most of it, and in between, silk weavers in Spitalfields roamed the streets tearing calico gowns off the women who wore them. The word itself comes from a Hindi word for speckled, which tells you it was never trying to be subtle.

Into this family, someone named a pattern Prudence.

Her name comes from the Latin prudentia, a contraction of providentia: foresight, literally seeing ahead. She was one of the four cardinal virtues, and painters gave her a mirror and, often, a second face on the back of her head, so she could watch the past and the future at the same time. She keeps the same habits here. Her roses and greens come back around every seven inches, which is how you know she means it. Her cotton is glazed, so dust slides off. So does flattery.

Prudence does not believe in urgency, and she is not going to tell you to hurry. She will only tell you the facts: twenty-five yards, Rose and Greens on a tinted chintz ground, printed in America on American cloth, at $84 a yard against $192. Enough for one room, done properly, once.

She trusts you to do the arithmetic. She did it first.
