Island Coral — Lyford Coral Two-Tone
Coral is the only decorative motif that is also, technically, the skeleton of a colonial organism — thousands of tiny polyps building a shared calcium carbonate architecture over centuries, one generation standing on the last, until the whole structure is large enough to wreck a ship or hold up an island. The pattern is named for Lyford Cay, the private enclave at the western end of Nassau where a certain kind of person has been having a certain kind of winter since the Eisenhower administration, and where the line between the garden and the reef has never been entirely clear.
China Seas printed these coral branches in a two-tone red that captures the way real coral darkens at its center and lightens at its tips — the striations aren’t decoration, they’re structure, rendered on a white Belgian linen-cotton ground that reads as clean and sun-bleached as a conch shell on a windowsill.
Twenty yards at outlet price, 52” wide with a 40” repeat on 55/45 linen-cotton woven in Belgium and handprinted in the USA. That’s enough for a full set of Roman shades and a banquette, or curtains in a room where the French doors open onto something worth looking at. This is summer fabric for people who use summer as a verb, and it has been waiting on a shelf in Valatie, New York, for exactly the right house to find it.
