China Seas Fabric: ZeZe Leopard - Custom Celestial Blue on Tinted 100% Linen

Every fabric house has a leopard print. Most of them are trying to be serious about it — realistic spots, naturalistic scale, the kind of pattern that wants you to believe an actual cat was involved. ZeZe Leopard is not that print. China Seas took the leopard spot and abstracted it into something closer to a scattered field of pebbles or seeds — small, irregular, rhythmic, with no attempt whatsoever to look like an animal hide. The "leopard" in the name is ancestry, not description. What you actually see is a tight, allover geometric that happens to have the organic irregularity of a spotted coat without any of the decorating baggage that comes with putting an animal print on a sofa. Nobody walks into a room upholstered in ZeZe and says "oh, leopard." They say "what is that?" Which is worth more.

Celestial Blue on tinted linen is the colorway that pushes ZeZe furthest from its animal-print origins. The spots are a clear, medium blue — specific enough to read as blue rather than grey, restrained enough to sit in a room full of other patterns without picking a fight. On a tinted ground the contrast softens, which lets the print read as texture from across the room and as individual spots only up close. Ten yards on a hundred-percent linen at fifty inches wide is a real project's worth of fabric — enough for a pair of club chairs and a bolster, or a full set of dining seats with yardage left for the pillow that ties it all together.
